 Northern Indiana is known as "Lake
Country", with over 650 lakes in Elkhart County and the surrounding 10 counties
of Indiana and Michigan. The lakes are weekend getaways for many of the
local city dwellers, with the small towns around the lakes increasing their
populations many times.
Boating, sailing, fishing, autumn
colors, hunting, festivals and vacationing are all popular pastimes.
Many rivers in the area offer
kayaking and canoeing. State parks in the area and nature preserves offer
plenty of hiking. Deer can be seen nearly everywhere along the roads.
Resorts along the south and eastern
shores of Lake Michigan are also close by.
