Indiana and Michigan are home to more
than 130 wineries. Both states have active wine and winery associations
and tour plans. The area is rich in fruit, cherries, apples, blueberries,
strawberries, etc.; all of which are made into wines. The area is also
home to many varieties European-American hybrid grapes and some vinefera
grapes. The grape varieties grown here include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Marechal Foch, Merlot, Pinot
Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Seyval Blanc, Syrah,
Traminette, Vidal Blanc, and Vignoles.
In February, 2011, the 2005
Chateau Chantal Proprietor's
Reserve Krupka Vineyard Caberet Franc was selected to be on the prestigious wine
list of the restaurant Sixteen in the Trump Tower in Chicago.
In the same month,
Brys Estates was selected to be one of
the featured wineries, along with Sonoma County's Rodney Strong, on a 12-night
wine Mediterranean wine cruise aboard the new Celebrity Solstice. The
cruise will visit the best wine regions in the Mediterranean: Barcelona, Spain;
Nice, France; Italy's Pisa, Rome, Naples and Venice; and UNESCO World Heritage
sites Dubrovnick, Croatia; and Kotor, Montenegro.
Satek Winery, near Angola, IN (about
50 miles from Elkhart) won the Indiana Wine of the Year in 2010 at the
Indy International Wine Competition
(the country's largest scientifically organized and independent wine
competition) for their Vidal Blanc Ice Wine.
