This two day workshop covers the foundational concepts of electricity, including terms, circuits, direct and alternating currents.  The course also includes numerous exercises and examples. Participants who complete this course can expect to gain knowledge and learn skills useful in an industrial environment.

Objectives:

  • Define electricity and electrical concepts like voltage, current, resistance, and power.
  • Introduce polarity in conjunction with AC and DC circuits.
  • Explore electrical properties like magnetism, capacitance, and induction.
  • Explain scientific notation, engineering notation and engineering units like milliamps, megawatts and picofarads.
  • Review basic electrical safety including hazards, PPE and good practices.
  • Learn how to analyze circuits using Ohms Law and apply these principles to series, parallel and combination circuits. (Real-world examples will be used to demonstrate these concepts with hands-on practical exercises).
  • Discuss wire size and ampacity, wire color, and usage.
  • Use NEC charts for wire, fuse, and breaker size.
  • Present commonly used electrical components such as relays, solenoids, contactors, switches, pushbuttons, indicators, and semiconductors.

Intended audience: Appropriate for all levels; it is recommended that participants possess good math skills.
