Supplier Selection, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Development - FREE

March 21, 2024 at 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

As organizations become more dependent upon suppliers, supplier quality management has become a key activity. How well supplier quality is managed can have significant effects on an organization.  In this workshop, you’ll learn about the benefits of having a formal system for selecting, developing, monitoring, and evaluating suppliers.  You’ll also learn about requirements from ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 related to supplier quality management.  The workshop also includes hands-on activities that will prepare you for developing your own supplier quality management system.


5S System - The Visual Workplace

This workshop offers participants an opportunity to experience first-hand how a 5S System reduces waste in a simulated production facility. Participants learn the concepts of the 5S System – Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain – and then apply them to transform a cluttered, disorganized, inefficient production area into an orderly and productive workplace.

The outcome is more than just a clean work area. The workshop shows participants how a 5S System can increase the value-added output per worker, with improvements in productivity, safety, and quality with savings going right to the bottom line.

Team Building in Manufacturing

Teamwork is recognized as an important aspect of modern manufacturing.  It is well known that people working together can accomplish more than individuals working in isolation.  This session will provide practical methods to help teams become more effective and successful.  Once an understanding of basic team dynamics is provided, participants will be able to recognize specific areas where teams need help and will also have sound methods to help teams improve.  Participants will have the opportunity to select the key skills that they can practice to improve the performance of their teams.


Manufacturing Skills for Success in the Workplace - Apr. 3, 4, 15, 22, 29 & 30; May 6, 20 & 29; June 3, 2024

Manufacturing organizations in today’s workplace expect employees to work smarter and contribute to the company’s success. To do this, employees must possess basic workplace skills, such as the ability to communicate effectively, work in teams, and think critically, as well as basic technical skills, such as the ability to read a blueprint and use common measurement tools.

The goal of this ten-day workshop series is to prepare you for a career in manufacturing. You will learn a wide variety of skills relevant to manufacturing through various methods, including hands-on activities and discussions. Courses are led by facilitators who have extensive experience in manufacturing.

Workforce Ready Grant (WRG) Funding is available for this training and will cover the training cost for qualified applicants.

This training is a qualified training program for Indiana Workforce Ready Grant funding. ISO 9001 Internal Auditor Training - Two-Day Workshop - April 10 and April 17

April 10, 2024 at 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

In this two-day workshop, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills you need to audit your quality system to the ISO 9001:2015 standards.  Course topics include updates to the ISO 9001 standard, requirements, auditing principles, and conducted effective audits.  You’ll also get hands-on practice using auding tools and techniques and have ample opportunities to get answers to questions you have about conducting ISO audits.

Cost of a public workshop includes one copy of the ISO 9001-2015 standard for each participant.


Intermediate Excel Skills

April 16, 2024 at 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

This workshop builds on skills learned in Purdue MEP’s Basic Excel Skills workshop.  You’ll learn additional built-in Excel functions, including logical and lookup functions, create tables and charts, sort and filter data, and create pivot tables.  Each participant will have a computer with Excel 2016 and will complete multiple exercises to practice what they are learning.


Culture Building: Vision, Mission, Values, and Strategic Alignment

Building the right culture is a key to achieving organizational success. Strategic alignment of organizational vision, mission, and values within every level of the organization is a must for us to achieve this success. This course shows the way. Participants learn how to take overall vision, mission and, values and break them down to each level within the organization to align them with our day-to-day activities and decision making.


Additive Manufacturing: Solutions for Low-Volume/Urgent Production - FREE

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, has gained significant popularity and recognition as a versatile manufacturing process. It offers unique advantages for low-volume production, enabling cost-effective and efficient manufacturing of complex parts without the need for traditional tooling or molds. In the case of supply chain disruption, it can also provide a critical solution to an urgent production challenge.


Leadership Skills For Success for Frontline Leaders - Dates are Apr 25, May 16, Jun 6, Jun 27, Jul 18, Aug 8, Aug 29, Sep 19 and Oct 10

To ensure supervisors’ success, these employees will need new tools and skills to succeed as a leader within your organization.  In this six-month, intensive course led by Purdue MEP Experts, participants will learn and practice key skills every supervisor needs.

Each session introduces new topics with an emphasis on how to apply these skills in the workplace.  The course facilitator will also provide a forum for participant discussion of impact and results.

Each participant will select a project to complete in the workplace with assistance from course instructors; depending upon the project, the course may pay for itself.

This program was developed in conjunction with the Purdue Manufacturing Board of Advisors.

Building Self-Confidence and Trust in a Customer Service Role

It has been said that a true leader has no fear.  Self-confidence is a critical trait for every leader to possess in the right balance.  Trust is the glue that holds every relationship together.  While trust is a simple thing, it is not always easy to accomplish.  In this course, participants will learn reliable principles and methods for building trust that every header can use.  Participants will have the opportunity to select the key skills that they can practice to gain the ease of genuine self-confidence and use reliable methods for building trust with others.


Basic PowerPoint Skills

PowerPoint is Microsoft’s powerful and easy-to-use presentation program. In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of PowerPoint 2016, including navigating the PowerPoint interface, developing a presentation, editing and enhancing text, and adding graphics, charts, and tables.


Quick Changeover/Set-up Reduction

Quick changeover is a lean manufacturing technique that can improve manufacturing efficiency by significantly decreasing changeover time. Quicker changeovers can reduce manufacturing costs and increase flexibility.

In this workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of set-up reduction in applying quick-change thinking to any type of setup or industry. This training focuses on attaining quick changeover through the systematic elimination of the internal components of a setup while streamlining the final procedure.


Statistical Process Control (SPC) with Capability

Statistical process control (SPC) involves using statistics – numbers and data – to measure and control the quality of a process. Manufacturers use SPC to reduce reject rates, save money and time, and ultimately consistently deliver products that meet customers’ requirements. In this all-day workshop, which includes numerous hands-on activities and realistic examples, you’ll learn about SPC concepts that you can easily apply to your everyday work in manufacturing or quality.

Design FMEA

June 11, 2024 at 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, or FMEA, is a structured approach used to identify ways in which a product or process can fail, estimate risk associated with specific causes, and prioritize actions that should be taken to reduce risk. In this full-day workshop, you’ll learn about design FMEAs (DFMEA) as described by AIAG in the June 2019 publication Failure Mode and Effect Analysis – FMEA Handbook by AIAG and VDA, including the format and content of DFMEAs.

Emotional Intelligence

Daniel Goleman contends, “IQ determines the careers and professionals people enter, but EQ (emotional intelligence quotient) determines how far they get in that career or profession.”  Emotional intelligence is the ability to comprehend value and manage the emotions of one’s self and others.  It is an essential skill for leaders and for a project team environment.  Leaders need self-awareness, self-discipline, motivation, social competence, and empathy, but our society isn’t development people with these competencies.

This workshop explores the importance of using emotional intelligence for creating a stronger leadership model.

Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) - 5 Day Course - August 6,7, and 13,14,15, 2024

August 6, 2024 at 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

This five-day workshop provides the basic skills and knowledge you need to work with the programmable logic controllers (PLCs) found in a typical manufacturing plant.  The course begins with a review of relay logic, and then you’ll learn PLC programming, including general logic, timers, counters, and math functions, followed by human-machine interface (HMI) programming.  The workshop includes hands-on labs where you will practice implementing what you have learned on a self-contained PLC system.

PLCs used in this workshop are from Automation Direct, but the basic PLC knowledge and skills you will learn are easily transferable between PLC systems.

Productive Conflict Resolution

Conflict is a common problem in any organization that has people.  Often, leaders are uncomfortable dealing with conflict because they do not have a process that keeps emotions under control.  The good news is that an understanding of conflict, why it occurs, and how to manage it can help you turn a conflict situation into a positive opportunity for improvement.  Participants will also have the opportunity to identify the key skills that they can practice to improve their ability to handle conflict in a productive way.
